Kian Egan helps the RNLI 'Give it some Welly' for Mayday in Ireland

Lifeboats News Release

  • Date: 28/04/2014
  • Author: Niamh Stephenson

The Voice of Ireland judge and Westlife star Kian Egan has teamed up with the RNLI's volunteer lifeboat crews to lend his support to their Mayday campaign.

From Thursday 1 May until Monday 5 May the charity's volunteers will be selling yellow welly pin badges and key rings for a €2 donation, in cities, towns and villages throughout Ireland. There will also be a number of welly themed events held to raise funds for the lifesaving charity in Ireland.

The yellow welly was chosen to represent volunteer lifeboat crews for the Mayday campaign as it is an essential piece of RNLI crew kit. Waterproof with steel-capped toes, the specially designed boots keep the volunteer crew's feet warm and dry while also protecting them in dangerous conditions on deck. During gale force winds, rain and ice, keeping a sure footing can mean the difference between life and death for the volunteers.

Volunteer lifeboat crew have responded to the Mayday calls of those in trouble around Ireland's coastline for 190 years. These lifeboat crews that are on call every day, all year round, have spent an average of 137 hours at sea over Mayday weekends for the last 10 years. Many have full-time jobs and carry a pager with them at all times to alert them to a lifeboat callout.

Helping RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew from Sligo launch Mayday, The Voice of Ireland judge and former Westlife member Kian Egan said: 'As someone who grew up in Sligo on the west coast of Ireland, I know how hard the members of the RNLI work, and how dedicated they are to a job that they carry out as volunteers. On call 24 hours a day and prepared to launch in all weathers, I have huge respect for these brave men and women who come from all walks of life. As a surfer and someone who spends a lot of my time in the sea, it is always reassuring to know that they are there if I ever need them.

Thanks to the generosity of the public, these volunteers are highly trained and equipped and can continue to offer their specialised skills. I would encourage everyone in Ireland to get involved with Mayday, and to show their support by buying a yellow welly key ring or pin badge or to hold a yellow welly themed fundraiser. We have a great love of the sea in Ireland and so many of us use it for fun or for work, and when we are out there the RNLI keep us safe, so go on, give it some welly from 1-5 May.'

The RNLI continues to invest in its volunteer lifeboat crews and in lifesaving on Irish waters. This year alone will see another station open, bringing the total number of the charity's lifeboat stations in Ireland to 45. It will be at Union Hall in Cork and will operate on a two year trial. There will also be an all weather lifeboat put on station at Clifden in Galway, where the lifeboat crew have almost completed their training for the new vessel. Helvick RNLI has also received a brand new Atlantic 85 lifeboat, which is due to be put on service soon. The Aran Island's RNLI lifeboat crew now board their lifeboat from a new pontoon, shaving precious minutes off their lifeboat launch times and next year will see the very first Shannon class lifeboat arrive in Ireland, to be placed on service at Lough Swilly in Donegal.

Pauline McGann, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager added: 'We are asking people to 'give it some welly' and get behind Mayday from 1-5 May. The RNLI is celebrating its 190th anniversary this year and during that time 144,000 lives have been saved by the charity. For some ideas on how to get involved and to see what is going on around the country people can visit www.rnli.org/MAYDAY People can also support the campaign by texting the word Mayday to 50300 to donate €2'*

Last year, RNLI lifeboat crews from Ireland's 44 lifeboat stations launched 1,087 times, rescuing 1,278 people.

*Please ask permission from the bill payer. 100% of text cost goes to The RNLI across most network providers. Some providers apply VAT which means a minimum of €1.63 will go to The RNLI. Service Provider LIKECHARITY014433890.

Kian Egan announces new single I'll Be

@Celebritain |$|Apr 23, 2014

Rhino UK proudly announces the release of the highly anticipated second single from Kian Egan's debutalbum Home which reached no.2 in Ireland and top 10 in the UK. I'll Be is a pop rock love song and has a focusdate of 12th May 2014.

Written by US singer/songwriter, Edwin McCain, this melodic track reveals a new sound from Kian with gravelly rockier tones and featuring an acoustic guitar accompaniment paired with an orchestra, which produces a fantastic follow up single.

"I chose 'I'll Be' for my second single, as I've always absolutely loved this song. This song means a lot to me and being able to record it was an honour. I'm incredibly excited to be able to perform this for all my fans."

Kian is enjoying the return to music with the success of debut album Home, which contains a careful selection of songs that reflect Kian's varied taste and passion for music. The release of the second single demonstrates that there's no stopping the Sligo born singer, who's also currently filming The Voice of Ireland where he is a coach and makes regular appearances on Daybreak and This Morning as a presenter. Produced by Brian Rawling, I'll Be gives Kian's fans an insight into his personal preferences in music and his involvement in the creative process when producing this album. The album Home is available to buy now.

ARTICLE!!! Voice star reveals he's Kian to try acting

Voice star reveals he's Kian to try acting

Former Westlife singer lines up auditions for roles in Hollywood

Kian Egan could be on his way to the US after The Voice of Ireland

Kian Egan has revealed he's lining up some acting auditions after The Voice Of Ireland is finished.

The star, 33, has been in demand since winning I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and is now considering adding acting to his list of achievements, following the success of his debut solo record Home.

Kian revealed: "I am shooting a video this week for my second single - I have some presenting jobs over the summer and I am in major talks with TV shows.

"Then I have a holiday booked for a few weeks so I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my wife and my little boy.
"I have some big summer shows happening but it's trickling along. It's a case of bedding in and getting a few done before I go jumping in at the deep end and go booking 200 gigs.

"The last five months have been such a whirlwind and I have pushed myself in so many different directions I want to sit back for a minute before I go forward again."

The Sligo singer said he is delighted with how his first solo record has been received.

He added: "I am amazed at the reception the album has got - for me as one of the non-lead singers in Westlife it was all about the opportunity to do it. I never thought I would have a No2 album in Ireland and a No9 album in the UK.

"If nothing else ever happens for me in music again, I will still be delighted I got this opportunity.

"I am very lucky to have a great mix in my life, being a coach on a TV show, making records and TV presenting. What's next? My agent wants to send me to LA for acting roles. I'd try it - why not?"
In a shock vote on Sunday night both Kian's acts - Jay Boland and Paddy Molloy - were booted off and the former Westlife singer got into a row with fellow coach Bressie over tactical voting.

With no acts left, Kian said Brendan McCahey must win the show as he is the best contestant left.

He revealed: "For me personally it doesn't make that much of a difference - it is not about the coaches and we shouldn't make it about the coaches.

"I do believe it is about the acts - they are the ones getting the record deals at the end of the day. I really hope the right person wins - Brendan deserves it."

Kian said in spite of his disappointment, he is still happy to be on The Voice.

He said: "I still love being on the show - it's great to be a part of and it's a great format. But I think there are a few flaws in the way it works in that it's my team against each other up until the semi finals."

And now there's a vacancy on The Voice UK with Kylie Minogue leaving, Kian said he would happily step in.

He revealed: "I wouldn't be tempted to jump ship from the show here but if I got offered The Voice UK I would try and do both as schedule-wise they don't really clash and in my brain it would be possible.

"I would love to do both - why not?"
